Introduction of Japanese-English News Article Alignment Data
約12年間分の読売新聞とThe Daily Yomiuri から，情報通信研究機構において自動作成された対訳コーパスについて，その概要を述べる．このコーパスは，
http://www2.nict.go.jp/jt/a132/members/mutiyama/jea/index-ja.html
において一般に公開されており，これまでに約70程度が配布されている．このコーパスを使うことにより，実例としての日英対訳文が利用可能である．今後は，コーパス配布に加えてWebからの検索サービスを検討している．
National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) automatically constructed ``Japanese-English News Article Alignment Data'' (JENAAD) from about 12 years of issues in the Yomiuri Newspaper and the Daily Yomiuri. It is publicly available at
http://www2.nict.go.jp/jt/a132/members/mutiyama/jea/index.html.
JENAAD has been sent to about 70 organizations on their request. It allows a user to search for comprehensive Japanese-English translation pairs. NICT is planning to provide a search engine on JENAAD. The session will be conducted in Japanese.

Introducing Parallel Corpus Concordancing in the Classroom
英語コーパスが教室に普及していない理由のひとつに，検索結果の英文の難易度が高く，語法の検証や発見にまで至らないことがある．本セッションでは，英語テキストに対応する日本語対訳テキストを併せ持つ「日英パラレルコーパス」を活用し，英文理解の負荷を軽減させることによって，指導実践への応用を試みる．コーパスには日英新聞記事対応付けデータ（内山・井佐原, 2003），検索プログラムにはParaConc(Barlow, 2002) を使用する．
For EFL learners, one of the most widely acknowledged barriers in using a monolingual corpus is the difficulty students have understanding the concordance examples retrieved. The recent development of English-Japanese parallel corpora has exciting potential for not only lowering this barrier, but in increasing the effectiveness of data-driven learning (DDL) applications. The translation in the first language enables a learner to understand the target language concordance lines, and provides a richer context, giving the learner “a better ‘feel’ for how the target language is used” (Hunston, 2002). In this session, I will show some activities that teach TOEIC vocabulary for beginning level learners, using Japanese-English parallel corpus (Utiyama & Isahara, 2003) concordancing with ParaConc(Barlow, 2002). The session will be conducted in Japanese.

Multingual Concordancing with ParaConc
The availability of translation (parallel corpora) provides linguists and language professionals with a new and potentially very rich resource for carrying out cross-linguistic analyses. In this session we will explore how a multilingual concordancer, ParaConc, can be used to investigate equivalences and contrasts between two languages. ParaConc permits a wide range of investigations of translated texts, from the analysis of bilingual terminology and phraseology to the study of alternative translations of a single text. In order for the software to work, the translated texts have to be aligned. We will discuss what this means and illustrate how a ParaConc alignment utility works.
The program includes routines for highlighting potential translations, including an automatic component "Hot words," which uses frequency information to provide information about possible translations of the searchword. We will focus on how different search routines and frequency information can be used to carry out linguistic investigations related to contrastive lexis, syntax and semantics.
Participants will be able to take part in a hands-on session so that they can explore the different features of ParaConc and work with a Japanese-English bilingual corpus.
